Applying and Deadlines

Can I apply for study programmes taught in Norwegian?

International students are welcome to apply to any programme where they meet the admission requirements. Applicants have to meet the general admission requirements and document proficiency in Norwegian to be eligible for admission. What English-language programmes does HiØ offer?

HiØ offers a limited number of study programmes taught in English

When is the application deadline?

Information about the application deadlines is found on each program’s page in the study catalogue. Click on the box “Admission” for the deadline for each programme.

How do I apply for admission to English-language programmes?

You apply for admission in the digital platform “Søknadsweb.” All required documents to show that you satisfy the admission requirements must be uploaded in Søknadsweb. See how to apply

Can I apply after the application deadline?

No.

What do I do if I do not get a receipt confirming that I have applied for admission?

After an application is successfully submitted in Søknadsweb, you should receive a receipt sent to your registered e-mail. If you do not get this receipt, then you should first check to make sure that your email address is correct in your application. Check your spam folder to see if the receipt is there. Finally, if you still have not received the receipt then you will want to try to register a new application or contact the admissions office.

Admission Requirements

Where do I find the admission requirements?

Information about the programme specific admission requirements is found on each program’s page in the study catalogue. Click on the box “Admission” for the requirements for each programme.

Can I be admitted to a study programme if I do not satisfy all of the requirements?

No, you must document that you satisfy all of the admission requirements to the programme for which you have applied. Conditional admission can only be granted if the applicant documents that they are in the process of completing parts of the admissions requirements.

Do I need to document upper secondary school when applying for an English-language master programme?

Yes, upper secondary education must be documented by the submission of a dated and signed certificate of competence or certificate of upper secondary education. A transcript of the examination record is normally not valid documentation.

Upper secondary education taken outside the Nordic countries must be documented by a dated and signed certificate from the upper secondary school in the original language. If the original language is not English or a Nordic language, you must also enclose an official translation.

How can I document English language proficiency?

Proof of funding is a requirement for me. How much money do I need to document to show proof of funding?

Applicants from outside the EU/EEA must submit proof of funding when applying for admission. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) stipulates the amount required to be granted a residence permit for study purposes. The amount is adjusted every year and can by found on our website, along with information on how to document proof of funding

Documentation

How do I submit documents?

All required documents must be uploaded into your digital application (Søknadsweb) by the given deadline. We recommend that you upload documents in PDF format. It is important to make sure that the documents uploaded are complete (the whole document is visible) and legible. Documents sent to us via e-mail or by post will not be considered or returned.

Where do I find information about the documentation requirements?

Each applicant is personally responsible to make sure that the documents they provide in their application meet our documentation requirements. Documents that do not meet our requirements will not be used in the consideration of your application for admission. You can read about our documentation requirements

Should I upload a curriculum vitae, motivation letter and/or letter of recommendation?

There is no need for uploading documents that are not relevant for admission. Documents that are not necessary for documenting the admission requirements will not be considered. It is important that applicants familiarize themselves with the document requirements and upload only necessary documentation in their application.

Have you received my documents?

You are able to check yourself in your digital application (Søknadsweb) which documents we have access to in your application. Uploaded documents are found under “My documents” in your application.

How do I document that I am completing the qualifying education the semester after the application deadline?

You must upload a signed and stamped transcript of record that shows the coursework you have already completed, as well as documentation of the courses you will be completing. In some cases, you will also need a signed and dated letter of confirmation from your university stating what programme you are enrolled in and your expected date of graduation.

Can I send in my documents and receive advice regarding my application?

The admissions office can provide feedback and advice regarding your qualifications during the period September 1 – October 15. To request a review of your qualifications, you must send an email with your documents to opptak@hiof.no. A review will take appr. 3 weeks.

Do I have to upload new documents when I have previously applied?

Documents that you have uploaded into your digital application (Søknadsweb) previously and that are still accessible can be found in Søknadsweb under the tab “My documents”. Some documentation is only relevant for one admission round (i.e. proof of funding, admission essays, certain language tests, letters of confirmation). It is the responsibility of each application to make sure that the available documents meet our documentation requirements.

Do hard copies of my documents need to be sent in the mail?

Only in certain circumstances do applicants have to send hard copies of their documents to the Admissions Office. Applicants with degrees from Cameroon, Canada, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Ghana, Nigeria, the Philippines, Sudan, Uganda, and the USA must send their bachelor’s transcripts as hard copies directly from the relevant college/university, in addition to uploading them online.
