A Squash and a Squeeze

Connections to the Curriculum in English: This is a simple and amusing story in the format of a fairy tale. The book has repetitive language and can be used as a model text for young learners to start writing simple texts. Furthermore, this book serves as an excellent model for literary analysis for older students illustrating all the terms needed in a clear way, like setting, plot, theme, foreshadowing, turning point etc.

Summary: A little old lady lives all by herself, but she is not happy. She finds her house too small. She asks the wise old man for help. He tells her to bring her animals into the house, first the hen, then the goat, the pig and the cow. The little old lady exclaims that her house is a “squash and a squeeze”. Then the wise old man tells her to take her animals out again, one by one, and the little old lady is amazed at how big her house feels.
