Lecture 1

ART EDUCATION OF UKRAINE IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: NATIONAL AND EUROPEAN CONTEXT

The topicality of the research stems from the need to rethink the historical experience of higher art education in Ukraine, which has developed in the context of approval of European artistic and cultural values.

In the author’s view, one of the conditions of Ukrainian culture entry into the world context today is not only popularization of Ukrainian artists’ work or establishment of the sources of their artistic inspirations, but likewise the awareness of the phenomena of Ukrainian artistic and pedagogical movement as a unified process in the worldview matrix of the Western culture.

The author set the goal to acquaint the scientific community with the formation of artistic and pedagogical education in Ukraine in the first half of the 20th century, with its European vector and the teaching methods of famous Ukrainian artists in the context of the regularities of the development of artistic education of the early 20th century.

Analysis of the artistic processes is mostly based on comparing the phenomena of Ukrainian art with the Western art history and searching for appropriate analogies. Traditionally, the analogies are explained by the link of Ukrainian art with the art of the Western Europe and its influence, and the differences are interpreted accordingly due to the manifestation of the national identity and the relation with folk traditions.

Lecture № 2

THE CONVERGENCE OF SLOBOZHANSKA ICONOGRAPHY IN THE DISCOURSE OF WESTERN EUROPEAN BAROQUE

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, Lebedyn, Slobozhanska region, late 17th-beginning of 18th century.

In this lecture you will learn about the influence of Western European Baroque art on the iconography of the region of Slobozhanska (Ukraine) during the 17th and 18th centuries. The use of Western European religious themes by Slobozhanshchyna icon painters, in combination with Byzantine iconographic traditions and their transformation to the spiritual and religious features of the Slobozhanska region, contributed to the development of a regional iconographic art, a process that could be regarded as a unique phenomenon in the history of Ukrainian culture.

The stylistic program of Slobozhanshchyna iconography of the Baroque period was influenced by symbolic and emblematic Western European collections that inspired icon painters to create new iconographic subjects.

During the lecture, information about the artistic and symbolic system of icon painting will be presented, its characteristic stylistic features will be examined, and attention will be drawn to the borrowing of elements from Western European painting and graphics in Orthodox icon painting.
